Welcome to Leipzig

The City
An up-and-coming metropolis of 500,000 inhabitants, Leipzig is situated in the heart of eastern Germany, an ideal location to discover the wonders of the new European Community. Regarded as one of the New Europe’s “boom towns”, Leipzig is a rich cultural Mecca of the arts and letters in addition to being a commercial, trade, and financial centre.
When you have time, enjoy a virtual city walking tour.
Rich in Art, Culture and Music
There is the St Thomas' Boys Choir which emerged from musical performances during services at Leipzig's Augustinian Canons more than 780 years ago. Johann Sebastian Bach was its most famous choirmaster between 1723 and 1750. The Boys Choir is particularly committed to Bach's musical heritage. Leipzig's international reputation as a city of music is closely associated with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Its history began with the "Grosse Concert" ("Great Concert") of 1743.

Science and Education
The University of Leipzig dates back to 1409. Its long tradition knows names like Leibniz, Hertz, and Heisenberg. The University and the German National Libraries are known for their impressive collection of historic scripts and comprehensive collection of German books. In 2010 the LIPSION laboratory will celebrate its 12th anniversary.
Leisure for Body and Soul
In Leipzig you can feel a bit of dolce vita. Parks, Cafés, and Restaurants invite to stay for a while. The new art gallery “Bildermuseum” has become a major attraction for Leipziger and guests from all over the world. So did the Leipzig Zoo. With its strategic concept of creating thematic regions and shaping landscapes close to the wildlife the visitors are taken into the species world.
